Book Description:

I was born into the world covered in blood, and that's exactly the way I left it.

Ever since, I have been damned to walk the boundary between life and death alone. Unwillingly turned and left to my nightmare, I have seen men commit countless horrors and committed many of my own.

My origins shall remain unknown, my true self hidden. I have been called by many names, but in this life I am known as the Witch Hunter. I have been asleep these past 150 years, until I was awoken by a haunting call.

Zachary Degaud was twenty three when he died. The problem was, he didn't stay that way.

Present day, he's just another vampire with another unremarkable story. That is, until he manages to provoke a two thousand year old witch named Katrin, who wants to make him pay in the most horrible way imagined.

Along with his brother Sam, newly made vampire Liz and their only witch ally, Gabby, his only chance for survival is to summon the ancient and unpredictable vampire known as the Witch Hunter.

Zac is just looking for a way out of his psychopathic witch problems, but instead will find himself falling head first into a blood feud that has stretched thousands of years.

Aya has been asleep for the past 150 years, until she was awoken by a haunting call. The witch she has been hunting for thousands of years, Katrin, has resurfaced and marked a young, annoyingly arrogant vampire by the name of Zachary Degaud. Unless she does something, he will die a slow and painful death. He has given her an opportunity to end the witch, but does she want to help him or leave him to his fate?

Zac will get under her skin like no one else has and she just might find herself making the ultimate sacrifice before he is gone forever.

They will both have to choose sides and look deep within themselves before the end. But, what Zac learns about himself, will surprise him most of all.

My Review

The Witch Hunter by Nicole R. Taylor
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was provided a copy of this book without charge for an honest review. My opinions are my own and have not been influenced by any payment, agreement or other compensation.

Zac and Sam Degaud are brothers and Vampires living in the historic home of their family in Louisiana, a home with a reputation of being cursed. When Zac inadvertently runs afoul of the spirit of a powerful witch, Katrin, he and his brother, along with his brother’s newly made vampire girlfriend, Liz and a young self taught witch, Gabby must call upon an ancient witch hunter to help them face the Katrin.

Aya, the witch hunter, is awakened. She is not truly Vampire, but something more. She is drawn to Zac and finds herself liking the others despite trying to maintain an aloof attitude, but she harbors secrets and a history with the witch Katrin and other paranormal players who make appearances in the story.

The writing is light and interesting (it could easily have taken a dark gloomy turn) making the book an easy read. The characters are likeable if a little flawed (as good characters should be in my opinion) I can’t wait to find out more in the next book! Which brings me to my only complaint…

Too many unresolved issues, storylines, character back-stories, etc…

Arrghh! Nicole, you are being cruel to me! There were tons of hints at more information, so as a reader I assume I will eventually get that information. With a series I know there will be some of that information that I won’t get until later books, but the resolution of just a few issues would help to ease the abrupt and awkward end to an otherwise compelling story.

So, here are some examples of what I mean. There is some kind of ugly back-story in the history of the brothers and the house that is only hinted at multiple times. The making of Liz seems to be hinted at as some sort of no other choice situation, but is not explained. The history between Katrin and Aya is a mystery. The other Vampires and Aya has got to be a compelling side story. The enslavement of the vampires by Katrin is a mystery. Only Gabby had some of her back-story filled in and it was a very interesting side-note to the book.

The open-ended hints and tidbits regarding nearly every other aspect of the story left me anxious (not in a good way) at the end. I don’t mind some anticipation for the next book, but I have to deduct one star for the unfulfilled state of anxiety I am left in. Nicole, I beg you to put me out of my misery soon!
