I couldn’t wait to get these tights off, not to mention the heels. I was getting some major blisters and my feet were killing me, but those would have to wait until I made it home. Opting for the far bathroom to avoid the mile-long line at the nearby one, I continued down the halls until they had significantly thinned out.

It was a relief when I finally made it. I pushed the door open and stepped inside. I momentarily relaxed as I hastily took off my tights and replaced my shoes. The ragamuffin look wasn’t really in style and I was glad to get rid of my ripped tights.

Shifting quickly, I spared a glance in the mirror only to find my eyeliner smudged. I definitely had the goth look going on. With a paper towel, I carefully wiped the smears away until I looked normal again. I tossed the rag in the trash and my hand found the door handle.

Just as I was about to leave, I heard a very inappropriate moan. Ugh, some people had no class. Sex in a high school bathroom was disgusting. Just thinking about all the germs and STDs that could be acquired grossed me out.

Not wanting to know who it was, I headed to the door so I could slip out as quickly as possible.

I was so close to escaping unscathed. That was, until I heard a familiar voice urging the girl on. At first, I froze, stunned. It couldn’t be; it just couldn’t. At that moment I suddenly didn’t care if I was interrupting hot sex.

Sheila started to tremble when he broke free from the last of whatever or whoever had imprisoned him. A shiver raced through her and she knew.
Grant had just broken free from Keir Hamilton’s mental hold over him.
He tore off his tunic and whipped it aside. With nothing but the Hamilton’s plaid hung low on his waist, he was an impressive sight. Legs braced, arms by his side, fists clenched, he closed his eyes. Cast in the soft, flickering glow of a single sputtering torch, sweat slicked muscles rippled down his long warrior’s body. Was he praying? Long moments passed. Every one of them a lifetime as her heart thundered. Then, as if replacing one swift divine moment with another, his eyes snapped open and met hers.
It felt like a freight train hit her.
“Och, my wee geal,” he whispered.
Wee what?
Sheila made to speak but the words died on her lips when in two swift strides, he pulled her into his arms. The word ‘wee’ seemed a massive understatement when up against him. Though she was fairly tall at five foot seven, he had to be a foot taller. Lord, she felt tiny! What had been but a tremble became a harsh fiery heat that whiplashed through her body. Emotional state and sensory awareness in overdrive, she put her hands against his hard chest.
“Oh, I shouldn’t have done that,” she murmured. But she didn’t pull her hands away.
No, if anything, she pressed tighter and curled her fingers slightly. It was one thing to meet a man in your mind, another thing entirely to feel him pressed up against your body. When he tilted up her chin, her eyes slid shut. Why, she’d never know. She supposed somewhere deep inside she wasn’t ready to look too closely into his eyes.
But why?
Perhaps she was afraid of what she’d see there. Perhaps though he seemed so strong she’d see years of mental abuse flicker in his gaze. Mental abuse inflicted by Keir being twisted within his mind for so long. The very idea of it made her sick to her stomach.
But none of that mattered when she felt his warm breath whisper over her lips. Close, so very close. She could all but feel his mouth hovering over hers. Time slowed as her lips fell open. Sensation heightened. A slow burn covered her cheeks. An ever so slight throbbing began first on the sides of her neck as emotion welled. Her heart pounded so strongly that her lips pulsed, ready for the pressure, the weight of his mouth against hers.

Extract from Isis, Vampires and Ghosts – Oh My! by Janis Hill
Chapter 5

Estella had the grace and timing to wake up just after I’d hauled her dead weight, literally, into the chair and balanced it there long enough the grab the rope.
“By the Light of Isis, what do you think you’re doing?” Her tone was nearly petulant enough to be the old Estella asking me, not the new peace-and-love one.
“Following your High Priestess’ instructions.” I grunted while tying her hands behind her back as best I could, before continuing to wrap the rope around her and the chair.
“But why are you tying me to a chair now?” she asked, aghast to realise just how tight I had done it. “Branwyre can’t take over until night time. We’ve got at least another hour.”
Ignoring her question for a moment, I snatched her right foot and tied it to the corresponding chair leg. Then, ignoring the attempted kick, did the same to her left one.
“Roxanna clearly states in her instructions here to gather the required items, purify them and set it all up, you included.” I waved the note at her before continuing to wrap her legs, backside and chair in the rope. Yeah, I’d gotten a decent amount. Who says two for one sales are a waste of time? “Nowhere in her instructions does it say we should stop for coffee and a chat. When I’ve got as much of it ready as I can before moonrise, I can actually have a rest. You know, something even we non-undead need to do from time to time.”
She went to protest, I even paused to watch the show I felt she was about to perform, but other than gaping a few times like a stunned fish, she stayed quiet. Wow, this Light of Isis was amazing if it could prevent the Queen of Whinge from speaking.
“Fine then,” she finally managed, a slight sulky tone to her voice. “But how am I meant to eat dinner?”
I sighed; I hadn’t honestly thought of that, going along the lines that she was dead. Yes she was an animated corpse right now, but dead was dead. You shouldn’t have to provide meals for them.
“Nowhere in my instructions does it say I have to feed you.” I muttered. Then feeling I should relent a little as she’d found it within herself to be nicer. “But how about I order pizza, and you eat it cold later. Surely even the Light of Isis can’t have cured you of your cold pizza habits.”
She sighed, but said no more for a moment. Didn’t even pout, which surprised me even more than the silence.
“I do wish you’d be more respectful of Isis and her purifying Light,” is all she eventually said as I was adding a few more knots to the back of the chair.
“Uh-huh.” I was more interested in making sure I’d done a good job, than listen to a lecture on appropriate religious respect. Especially from someone who in the past hadn’t held any respect for anyone or anything.
“And no dinner is fine; I don’t seem to have the need to eat that often anymore.” She continued, trying to watch me over her shoulder. “I won’t have you dissing cold pizza though.”
“Sure!” I said, standing back and wiping sweat from my brow and then my hands on my dress. I remembered I was still in one of my best ‘sombre but not kinky’ little black dresses, not having had a chance to change. So Roxanna’s wodge of cash was buying me a few clothes tomorrow, too. Why not! If I wasn’t allowed to go home until this was all over, she owed me at least a pair of jeans and clean underwear. I checked the instructions again. Okay, so all items purified, sister roped tightly into chair. Salt time! Boy I hoped the motel’s maid service wouldn’t be too pissed at me, or at least wouldn’t notice until after we’d left.

Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper Blitz!

Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper
J.L. Bryan
Publication date: September 19th 2014
Genres: Adult, Horror, Paranormal

Ellie Jordan’s job is to catch and remove unwanted ghosts. Part detective, part paranormal exterminator, Ellie operates out of Savannah, Georgia, one of the oldest and most haunted cities in North America.

When a family contacts her to deal with a disturbance presence in the old mansion they’ve recently purchased, Ellie first believes it to be a typical, by-the-book specter, a residual haunting by a restless spirit. Instead, she finds herself confronted an evil older and more powerful than she’d ever expected, rooted in the house’s long and sordid history of luxury, sin, and murder. The dangerous entity seems particularly interested in her clients’ ten-year-old daughter.

Soon her own life is in danger, and Ellie must find a way to exorcise the darkness of the house before it can kill her, her clients, or their frightened young child.

Haunted Savannah

Ellie Jordan, the lead character in my new series, has a fairly interesting job—she works for a small private detective agency that specializes in capturing and removing unwanted ghosts.

I knew the setting of the series would be important, and it was fun to consider where a ghost-catching agency might be most profitably located.  An old city would be best, but there aren’t many of those in the United States.  In fact, by the standards of most of the world, we don’t have any truly old cities here, nothing as ancient as Paris, Rome, or Jerusalem.

The oldest cities are generally located along the East Coast.  I considered Boston and New York, but I’ve never even been to those cities—and besides, the Ghostbusters have pretty well staked out New York City as their territory.

The obvious choice for me was Savannah, Georgia, a city much closer to me, and one I’ve visited a few times (and look forward to visiting again in the future).  I knew I was lucky to have it close by; it’s not just old, but characterized by beautiful architecture dating back to the colonial era.  The downtown is made of up twenty-two squares, each with a small park surrounded by old mansions and other buildings in every conceivable architectural style.  It’s almost dreamlike to walk through the city surrounded by gardens, wrought iron, marble columns, fountains, and statues.  Beautiful, old, and not far away—a perfect setting for the new ghost series!

As I turned out during, I was luckier than I knew.  I’ve read again and again that seventy percent of the buildings in Savannah’s downtown are said to be haunted.  I have no idea where this figure came from, but it sounds like a lot.  The city isn’t just haunted because it’s old.

Do you remember how that house in Poltergeist was built on top of an old cemetery?  The entire city of Savannah is like that.  Countless graveyards have been paved over as the city expanded over the centuries.  Unmarked graves lie beneath the streets and the beautiful antique mansions.

The only thing more conducive to a haunting would be if the city were also built on top of old Native American burial grounds.  It turns out that’s the case, too.

No wonder they say the city is teeming with ghosts.  I think it’s going to be a fun place to spend the series.

“So you obviously have a thing for this girl,” Decker says.

I shake my head. “No, I just met her. I don’t know anything about her.”

“Yeah, but you want to. You want her for yourself. Otherwise you wouldn’t have yelled at me just now.”

Is it that obvious? I’m usually better at hiding this stuff.

“It’s not that. I just think you should leave her alone, Dek. She just got here and she needs time to adjust. She’s from Iowa, so this is a big change for her. I bet she’s never even been to Connecticut before today.”

He nudges me, smiling. “And you want to be the one to show her around, right?”

“Don’t be an ass. I was just being nice to her. That’s it.”

“If she’s from Iowa, what the hell is she doing going to Moorhurst?”

I hesitate, not sure if I want to tell him. But he figures it out.

“Wait. Is she the scholarship winner?”

I nod, then drink my beer.

“Did you tell her who you are?”

“Not yet.”

I glance at the door and see two hot blondes walking in. Long legs. Short skirts. Big breasts. I keep my eyes on them but that image of Jade remains in my head and the hot blondes aren’t looking so hot.

“Why didn’t you tell her?”

“Because she doesn’t need to know. She’d feel uncomfortable around me if she knew my dad was paying for her school.”

“Do you plan on seeing her again?”

“Yeah, we’re going out tomorrow. I’m taking her to the party.”

The hot blondes spot me from across the room and smile. I don’t smile back but they still start walking toward me.

“You have to tell her who you are, Garret. She’ll be pissed if she finds out later.”

“Yeah, well, I’m not ready to tell her. And besides, what difference does it make? I’m not the one paying for her school. My dad is. It has nothing to do with me.”

“You need to tell her, especially if you want to be friends with her. Or more than friends. Actually, you can’t be more than friends. You can’t date the scholarship winner.”

“Why the hell not?”

“Because your dad would kill you. And Katherine would kill you.”

“I don’t give a shit about Katherine. And my dad doesn’t need to know. I’m in college now. He needs to stay out of my business.”

Decker sighs. “Do not do this, Garret. You get in enough trouble with your dad. Just leave the girl alone.”

Speaking of girls, the hot blondes are now approaching me. They almost look like twins. I’ve never been with twins before.

“Hey.” The one girl steps in front of me. I’m still standing next to the keg and she reaches behind me to get a cup. Correction. She uses the cup as an excuse to grope me. Instead of going around me, she leans in and presses her entire body against mine. Her arm goes behind me as she slowly takes a cup from the stack.

“Excuse me.” She smiles at me, our bodies still pressed together. “I just needed a cup.”

My one hand is at my side, the other is holding my beer. Normally, I’d grab the girl’s ass and pull her aside and see if I want to take this somewhere. And given the way her twin is eyeing me, I’m seeing a threesome in my future. Never had one of those.

“I’m Kristy,” the girl fondling me says. She had her hand on my ass but now it’s snaking down my chest, heading for my belt. “And that’s Misty.” She nods back to the other blonde.

Kristy and Misty? Seriously? I feel like I just walked on the set of a porn film.

“Are you two twins?” Decker asks. His eyes are huge, his voice eager. He’s such a nerd sometimes. This is why he doesn’t get girls. He doesn’t know how to play it cool.

“Yeah, we’re twins,” Misty says, meeting up with her sister. Now they’ve both got their hands on my chest and I have nowhere to go. The table is behind me and I can’t move. I’m trapped with two hot blondes attached to me. Should be every guy’s dream.

But I’m not interested. Not tonight. I know that’s completely crazy. Any other guy would jump at this opportunity. Grab an open bedroom and go for it.

That’s exactly what Decker’s thinking. He’s got his jealous smile going and he says, “Garret, I’ll see you later.”

He’s being a friend, doing what he’s supposed to do. Getting out of the way so I can take part in whatever these girls have planned for me. But I’m just not feeling it.

“Dek, wait.” I peel the girls off me and walk past them toward Decker.

“Hey,” Kristy says. “Where are you going?”

“I have a girlfriend,” I say, glancing back at her.

I hear her huff, then say to her twin, “Since when does that matter?”

I don’t know why I said that. I don’t have a girlfriend. And I just turned down a threesome. What the hell is wrong with me?

I picture those jewel-toned eyes. That beautiful face. That sweet smile. That’s what’s wrong with me. I can’t stop thinking of Jade.

“Do you know the story?”

Story? I didn’t want to think about it. I knew exactly what he was talking about. Instead, I wanted to close my eyes and wake back up at school, or wake up in my room. It could be tomorrow. It could be anything but right now. I couldn’t believe that this was really happening. As far as I was concerned, he couldn’t be real. Not even if I had wished it as hard as I could. This couldn’t really be happening.

“Story?” I whispered, closing my eyes. I could see the story play out in my mind as if I were there. I could see her, his wife; beautiful and blonde. Her eyes were open and curious. She was picking flowers with two of the most beautiful women in the land. Their wild curly hair, woven with crowns of flowers as they wore flowing silk dresses, caught in a gentle summer breeze as they gathered arrangements of flowers.

There was one flower – one that stood out to Persephone the most, soft and red. She picked it, and was engulfed in blackness, where the dark Lord lingered and waited. He was there. His face. His arms. He had her, and he was taking her down into his world, where he wanted me to go.

“You know the story, Summer,” he acknowledged, almost as if he had just seen the images play out in my mind of what I always imagined. I could feel his other hand on my cheek, his fingers drawing around my skin. I did know the story. He had taken the maiden from earth into his underworld, and made her his queen. He loved her. He wanted her. And then she was taken away from him. Her mother wanted her back. She ate seeds from a pomegranate; food that was in the underworld. Food of the dead, and that kept her connected with him always. She was to be shared for all eternity.

“What do you want with me?” I asked again, keeping my eyes closed. I didn’t want to be hypnotized. I didn’t want to feel anything more than the desire to run, but there was something that I couldn’t explain keeping me there, within his grasp.

“You belong to me, Summer. You always have, even when you were taken away from me. Even then, you still belonged to me. This is how it’s supposed to be. It was this way in the beginning, and it is how it will be in the end.”

“I can’t go with you,” I said, pushing his hands off of me. I pushed myself away from him, and slowly backed toward my house. This was someone’s awful joke. “If my mother hired you, you can tell her she wins.” His face was confused for a moment and then he shook his head.

“Summer, no one hired me. Nothing that you know is what it seems. Trust me.” I shook my head, wanting to laugh at him. Trust him? Had he looked at himself in the mirror? He was the last person on earth that looked trustable.

“I’m not going to stand here and let you mock me,” I snapped and turned toward the house, walking as fast as my feet could carry me. It wasn’t fast enough. I wasn’t fast enough. I felt his cold arms wrap around my waist and his cool breath was on my neck. His touch was just as startling as the first time. He sent shivers down my spine.

“I won’t let you go, Summer. You ate the seeds and you belong to me. You have to fulfill the promise that was granted to me.”

“I didn’t eat any seeds. I don’t know what you’re talking about!” I shouted, trying to shove him off of me.

“It’s just a story!” I continued to try to get him off of me, but to no avail, he was much stronger than me.

“Our love isn’t just a story, Summer. It’s real. Don’t you feel it?” I felt his hand press against my chest where my heart was, and it began to ache. I felt tears fill my eyes again and I tried to struggle harder. “No! Stop it!”

“I’ve searched for you for years, Summer, and when I found you, I watched you. I watched you paint my face over and over again, and knew that you had not forgotten about me. You know me, and deep down, you know the truth.” I fell to my knees, pressing my palms into my eyes. I was a mess of sand and water, and dried paint, and now of death. I felt his hands slip away, and I held my breath, counting to five. I needed to collect myself.

“Wake up, Summer. Wake up.” I whispered to myself, pressing my hands into my eyes again. I finally dropped my hands into the sand and opened my eyes. The only sound was the ocean and my heavy breathing. There was no voice. I was too afraid to turn around and see him standing there, but I knew I had to. I couldn’t sit in the sand all night. I bit my lip and slowly turned my head to see nothing but the expanse of the night and the ocean. There was no one. My painting and paints were clattered together, next to the split water.
